Meals for Moms
By Cynthia Cantrell
Did you know that MOYC provides a great service to its fellow moms? If you have a new baby, or are sick, or are going through a trying time, MOYC will have a member provide you with a hot meal for your family for dinner.
It may not seem like much, but for those of us with new babies (like me and my 4 month old) it can make a huge difference. It is such a relief when you are going on less than 2 hours of sleep to not have to worry about what you and your family are going to eat for dinner. If you are willing to provide one, we would be so grateful. It is easy to do and I have provided some helpful hints below. It's just one more easy way that we can help our fellow moms!
Helpful questions to ask the person you are bringing a meal:
- How many people to cook for? Are there older siblings? A grandparent visiting?
- Any food allergies? Any specifics, like a vegetarian in the house?
- What time do you eat?
- Anything you have had a lot of recently? (Sometimes, people get too many casseroles, dinners of spaghetti, etc)
- Anything specific you would like? Usually, the ones cooking are happy for suggestions!
- Is it ok to bring cookies (or whatever) for dessert? Some moms don't like their kids to eat sweets.........(at least that's what I hear. My kid lives off of 'Fruit by the Foot'.)
I found these questions to be really helpful. That way, you know that the person will really enjoy the meal and be able to relax and eat dinner.
I also try to bring the meal in a disposable dish, like gladware. That way, the mom doesn't have to worry about returning the dish and you don't have to worry about getting it back!
If you have a chance and are willing, PLEASE volunteer to bring a meal to someone. We have several pregnant moms and are in need of people to help. It's really easy and makes a big difference. If you are in need of a meal, LET US KNOW! Contact the Vice President to sign up to bring or receive a meal. (Contact info is on the board member page)
